So..let’s do this.
Number 10 – Throw Some Shade!!
It gets HOT in the summer, and the sun will beat you down. It will also beat right through your windows, and heat up your attic, which will heat your home up. Now, the hottest part of the day is like 3-4 pm during the summer. If any part of your home has full sun exposure, especially during that time of the day, whether back front or the sides, make sure you plan for some shade. You can plant fast growing trees like Areka Palms, Clumping Bamboo and American Red Maple for natural shade, and you’ll be happy if you plant it along the entire south and southwest sides of the home if you can…It’s really nice if you can find a home that has a nice big Live Oak or two…but those can take a long time to grow. A lot of people we talk with are looking at buying a brand new home, and there are some big benefits to doing that, but, you know, when you’re looking at buying a new build versus an existing home, shade is something that can easily be overlooked. Brand new homes will come with brand new trees, and you’ll be waiting at least a couple of years before your trees start giving you any kind of shade. Some key things to look at when searching for a home are the type and quality of attic insulation, Roof venting, quality of windows and any window shading, like bahama shutters or any window tinting.. Yeah,Those things can make a big difference in your comfort level as well as your electric bills during those hot summer months!
Number 9 – No local professional sports teams!
So if you’re moving from a big sports town and have a team you love, you’ll want to find people that like the same team so you can get the same feeling you got when you’d go see your team at one of your local hangouts. Now, surprisingly, that can be easy to do…Sebastian does has active Social media groups and some great local bars with sports packages so you can catch your team when they are playing. Now, just down the road in Vero Beach, we used to have the Dodgers spring training…but no more, but if you’re in to baseball, a 30-45 minute drive to Port Saint Lucie, and you can catch a Mets spring training game. Football fan? For you Patriots, Jets, Giants or Bills fans, you’ll be in good company, as there are a lot of people from those areas here in Sebastian. Being a Broncos fan myself, I can’t really say the same, but you might just see me at the bar with my orange jersey on…and if you do, come say hi! And that brings us to….
Number 8. Small, but quality local bar scene.
Sebastian is a relatively small town. 13,000 homes…Around 30 thousand people, but for a small town that doesn’t have a college, we’ve got a pretty lively bar scene. I mean, I know of some towns that just have one bar…and it’s a sketchy hole in the wall, but here in our little town, we have a nice variety..and what’s cool is, a good majority of them are right on the Indian River Lagoon, so you can enjoy the scenery, watch the boats go by and catch a nice breeze while enjoying your beverage of choice. Live music is usually happening at places like Earl’s Hideaway, the Tiki and Captain Hirams (if you watch Oak Island recently as of this video, they sat down at Hirams). You like craft beer? You’ll definitely want to visit our local brew pubs like Mash Monkeys & Pareidolia. One thing to mention is that not all bars or pubs will offer liquour. That’s a liquor license thing. There are only a certain number of liquor licenses available, and they are really expensive too, so if you’re looking for a place to go and have a liquor drink, call first to see if they serve it and save yourself a trip. Need more variety? A quick trip to the north in Melbourne or south to Vero will provide you with plenty of choices to find that perfect watering hole.
Number 7. Where are all the restaurants?
Don’t get me wrong, we have some good ones, but not enough..but if you like pizza, seafood or asian food, you’re in luck, because Sebastian has at least 2 of each of those. But if you’re looking for something a little more unique or culturally diverse, you’ll need to go to Vero or Melbourne to get your fix. I have to say, with every challenge, therein lies an opportunity. If you’re a restaurateur with a good idea for good food at good prices, it would probably do really well here in Sebastian! Think, something you’re missing from back east that everyone would love…but…please! no more pizza…no, I’m just kidding….but please, no more pizza
Number 6 – The Beach!
Whether spring, summer, winter or fall, the beach is always beautiful…and the water is never really that cold, so a quick jump in the water isn’t going to be too traumatic. From Sebastian, it’s only a 15 minute scenic drive over the bridge and straight to Wabasso beach. We’ve got some of the most beautiful beaches in the country here, and they are relatively uncrowded and absolutely beautiful. Any time of year is a good time to go to the beach and walk, exercise, relax and get a tan, fish or surf. Chances are, even if you’re not a beach person, you’ll go at some point to enjoy the beauty. Right…If you didn’t, that would be like living in New York and never going to Times Square. Another thing you won’t see are those boxes that you have to stick money in…No pay to play here. Beach parking is free.
Number 5 – Boating
Like the beach, if you don’t boat, there’s a good chance you likely will when moving here. You’ll either meet someone with a boat, charter a boat, go for a river cruise out of Hirams or you’ll just break down and buy one and make it a part of your lifestyle. So many places to explore and boat to…with the Indian River Lagoon and the inlet to the ocean, there really is no limit. This is a boater’s paradise. You can even take your boat for a weekend trip to the Bahamas! Make sure it’s big enough…you don’t want to try that on a skiff. One thing that’s important to know…As the area grows, the need for more boat and RV storage is on the rise…a few new storage yards are almost done, and we do have a couple of marinas and powered docks… but the best scenario is to buy a home with enough space to park your boat and/or your RV. Another option is to buy into a boat share. Either way, you’ll want to be on the water when you live here
Number – 4. Schools, Schools and more Schools!!
For you parents out there, this is big. Sebastian has a whopping 7 preschools, 5 elementary schools, 4 middle schools and 2 High Schools! All for a population of around 30 thousand people. Out of those 18 schools, only 5 are public and the others are either private or charter schools. So, you’re either going to pay or put your hat in the ring for a lottery pick for your child to be accepted. One thing to mention is that the high school has award winning music and football programs. The marching band is an eye popping 275 member band and they are awesome. They have participated in major parades across the country, most recently being invited to march in the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade in 2019. Sometimes you can hear them practice when you’re outside…and they are good! Pretty cool. We mentioned that there isn’t a pro team…so the Sebastian River High School Sharks are our main sports team here. We love them, and Fridays at the high school stadium during football season is where the action is.
Number 3 – We have bugs and critters!
Spiders, ants, mosquitoes, snakes, lizards, turtles, bobcats, yes…cockroaches…and these little things called noseeums…they’re like invisible flying vampires. They suck….no, literally suck. They pack a hell of a bite that will itch like crazy. When I first moved here in 2005, nobody told me about these things…I thought it would be a cool idea to go to the beach and fall asleep under the stars. When I woke up, my ankles were on fire and I scratched them and the itching kept getting worse and worse. When someone told me it was no see-ums…I thought they were messing with me. But, yeah, they’re real and they’re not spectacular. Awe, wish I would have met you before then, I would have warned you! Cool thing is you could put a bat house up, and the bats will come out at the same time the mosquitoes and noseeums do and will eat them. Nature has a way of answering any problems we have. Bats are the answer to your mosquito and no-see um problems!
Number 2 – Like one big family in a small town.
When you move here, You’ll get to know a lot of the people that live and work in the community. You’ll see them at the pub or grocery store. Your kids will go to school with each other. You do business with each other. You look out for one another. Sebastian still has a small town feel where you can wave and say hi to your neighbors. You can always tell the newbies to our area by who’s honking their horns at intersections. Once you get into the groove of living here, you’ll realize that honking and aggressive driving are things of the past and are less common here in Sebastian, and most likely, the person you honked at is someone you’ve already come across or will come across at some point. Courtesy goes a long way, especially in a small town!
Number 1 thing you should know before moving to Sebastian – Parks!
So many parks. The Sebastian River Area has numerous parks for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. I think we actually have more parks per capital than, like, most of the country…We’ve got parks for walking, jogging, exploring, playing, exercising, fishing, camping, and other types of recreational activities. There are in fact 35 parks in our local area! One of our favorite parks to take the dogs for a walk is Stormwater park. It’s big and has a lot of wide open trails and several bodies of water….but our all time favorite is hard to choose, because we like to camp and fish and walk, exercise…so much to do. So, at some point, you’re going to definitely want to put the parks on your list of places to see when you move to Sebatian! Even if you’re just here on vacation, check the parks out. It really is special to have so many public parks to enjoy.
