It’s no surprise that more people are moving to Florida than any other state. There are so many reasons why…the sun, sand and the lifestyle just to name a few. A lot of people move to Florida for the major attractions in Orlando, or to the thriving city of Tampa Bay. And then there’s little ol’ Vero Beach.
Vero is not considered a major destination in Florida, there are no big attractions, no major touristy things to do here and you won’t find a row of themed restaurants or hotels. In fact, there are no high-rises allowed except for 2 residential condo buildings that got snuck through a loophole in Vero’s height restriction code way back in 1973.
Nope….No gigantic spring break concerts on the beach here.. So, if you’re on the hunt for a city with non-stop nightlife and commercial tourist attractions. This isn’t your place. But if you’re looking for more of an ‘old Florida’ vibe, a little more laid back, some nature and just enough dining, entertainment and nightlife to keep it interesting…well, that’s Vero Beach.
So, what is there to do in Vero Beach that’s ‘fun’? Let’s check out our list of….
6 things to do in Vero Beach!
Number 6. Stay in one of the Historic Driftwood Inn rooms
This is where it all started. Although there are other hotel destinations on the beach like Gloria and Emilio Estefan’s Costa d’Este, and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, Waldo Sexton built this Vero Beach Icon in the early 1900’s..doors opened in 1930, and in 1947 he added a restaurant, now known as Waldo’s.
Yeah, now check this out…It was built by eye no actual blueprints were used. It’s said that Waldo Sexton stood outside and called out what he wanted to see, and the workers would just do it! Once it was complete, he filled the rooms with unique treasures from around the world… like there’s this bell theme going on…you can actually ring them if you’d like. Each of the original rooms is different and you can feel the history. It’s right on the beach, so the sound of the waves mixed with the unique architecture really embody what Vero Beach is all about…sort of that rustic/relaxed feel.
The food is delicious at the restaurant, and there’s a dining area that directly overlooks the beautiful Atlantic water….and here in Vero, we often get that really beautiful, clear aqua water color. You look up at the hotel…this wooden hand crafted piece of history, and it’s truly a unique experience.
Yeah, even as a local, it’s a great place to just come and relax and have a little ‘stay-cation’
Number 5. The Environmental Learning Center.
If you have a hankering to go kayaking or paddle boarding and just want to get into some nature and see some of the beautiful scenery that Vero has to offer…this is the place to go.
Yeah, the E-L-C as the locals call it, is a 64 acre piece of paradise. It’s Real Florida, right on the Indian River Lagoon. There’s alway something going on there, and it’s a great place to bring the kiddos. As a mom, when our girls were younger, I was always looking for things to do, and the ELC was a go-to.
For sure, but it’s not just for young kids. For the young adults, they have a Young Entrepreneurs Market, and a Middle and High School Steam Program. They have yoga classes, recently they had a Moon Forest Therapy Walk. There’s bike tours, art shows, and just so much! The ELC offers something for everyone, and it’s really a beautiful place.
Number 4. The Comedy Zone.
You know, they say that laughter is the best medicine
Who says that? They, them….you know
Ahh…got ya…ha! Well, if that’s the case, then The Comedy Zone is the place to be if you need some of that medicine! Located in the Riverside Theater, which is just on the east side of the Barber Bridge. It’s really a pretty location, because you have the big Riverside park there right on the Indian River Lagoon, and just down the street is the Museum of Art, and the Riverside Cafe.
Yep and on the weekends, Friday and Saturday year round, you can catch a comedy show inside at the Comedy Zone. There’s always two acts that go on…one opening act and one headliner…and, a lot of the time, these are national…they travel the country and perform…. There’s an Emcee, and there’s Cabaret seating, so you can get a group of friends or family together and sit at a table, order drinks, kick back and just laugh and if you get there early, they’ll be a band playing with food and drinks being served. It’s a great place for date night…Hey..we should do that for a date! Yep, we’re due, but it’s important to note that all shows have been postponed until late spring, so just keep that in mind. We still wanted to put this on the list, because it is a great thing to do here, and we’re really hopeful that it will come back soon.
Number 3. Charter a fishing boat.
Now this is a good time, and if you live here, fishing is just something that you will end up doing at some point. Kinda like, if you live in Colorado, you go skiing or snowboarding….here, you go boating, to the beach, and you go fishing. There are other things too, like mudding and hunting for alligator…and golf…but we’re talking about fishing right now. One of the best ways to go fishing is to go with someone who knows where the fish are, so you can actually catch something.
Yeah, if you’re just not into getting all the gear together and you don’t have a boat, and you want to actually have fun setting the hook and pulling in a big one, then chartering a fishing boat with a good captain is where it’s at. There are several fishing charters here in Vero and Sebastian, and each captain has their own specialty, so whether you’re looking for big game fish like SailFish, or you want to catch inshore fish like Snook to take home and cook, a quick search on Google will help you find the right one.
Now keep in mind that fish have seasons…so check first to see if the fish you’re looking for is in season. And remember, tight lines!
Number 2. Visit McKee Gardens.
This is a must do whether you’re visiting or if you live here. It’s so much more than just a botanical garden…it’s a huge18 acre tropical hammock and there are exotic plants and flowers, art exhibits, events and even has a new children’s garden.
So this guy, Waldo Sexton…the guy who built the Driftwood Hotel….he and another guy, Arthur McKee bought this land back in 1922….this tropical hammock…with the intention of growing citrus…it was huge business back then here in the Treasure Coast. By the way, if you haven’t read ‘A Land Remembered’ yet, and you live in Florida, or you plan on living in Florida….go get it right now…the audiobook is amazing…go get it on audiobooks and listen Even if you don’t live in Florida…get it anyway…..So Waldo and Mckee were going to plant citrus, but the land was deemed too beautiful to use as farmland. So these guys hired a landscape architect to build out the layout of streams and ponds and trails, while they went out and searched for the most exotic flowers and plants that they could find from all over the world.
So, orchids my favorite! Some of the most beautiful orchids and flowers and water lilies and these really beautiful fly-trapping pelican flowers, and even exotic wildlife. It’s truly a spectacular collection of nature’s beauty. And that’s why McKee is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is endorsed by the Nature Conservancy as a project of national significance. So in a nutshell, this is a must-see.
Definitely….and this takes us to…
Number 1. Walk the beach (look for shells, sea glass
And maybe some treasure). That’s another one of my favorite things!
Walking on the beach?
Well, yes, but I wasn’t talking about that. I was talking about treasure Ahhh! I mean, I do like walking on the beach too, but if I can find treasure while walking on the beach…well that’s kinda perfect.
Well, there’s no better place that I know of to do that than right here on the Treasure Coast! We love walking on the beach on a beautiful day, it’s a great place to just get recharged and to relieve some of the stresses of life…and when the shells are out, you can find some really cool ones. Her mom makes these really pretty pictures and mirror frames with shells.
Yep, there are shark’s teeth and sea beans and you can find sea glass. All kinds of fun stuff. But the really cool thing to find is a silver coin from one of the Spanish ships that crashed here a long time ago.
Yeah…it was a hurricane that wiped out 11 Spanish ships back in 1715. They were loaded with gold and silver, and while they were sailing from Cuba to Florida, bam..a hurricane came through and sank them and most of the crew and passengers…like 1000 men. When I say loaded..I mean like tons of gold and silver…On just one ship alone, there were like 40 tons of gold and silver found, plus 114000 coins..What?
So, now you know why I like walking on the beach so much! Although we personally have never found any treasure, believe it or not, it’s more common than you think….and that’s why a walk on the beach is our number one thing to do in Vero Beach. It could change your life.
